First Cast is based on a unique program that has taught thousands of youngsters to fly-fish. Genova's acclaimed Fly Fisher Apprentice Program is a field-tested system that takes children from the tying bench to the stream, from their first half hitches and Wooly Buggers, to long casts over rising trout or stripers in the surf. The program also helps the children to develop knowledge of and respect for the fish and their habitat.

When casting this line, you will notice the concentrated, yet very balanced weight distribution throughtout the belly. The profile will assist in easy load of the rod, suberb line control and a slightly delayed and very accurate turnover through the smooth tip. This, combined with a strong handling line tapered into a low friction, low diameter runningline will set you up for long casts and pin point presentations alike.

The introduction of the Speyworks 3volution fly line heralds the start of a new era in salmon fly fishing. Designed and tested on the banks of the Spey by ghillie and champion speycaster Bill Drury this line is set to be the most important line introduced this year. This line can be fished in classic style as a speycasting line but will also allow you to benefit from all the advantages of Skagit lines and shooting heads.
Unrivalled versatility for any double-hand rod fishing application. Supplied with four tips – Floating, Intermediate, Medium sink and Fast Sink. Turn over any fast sinking tungsten tip with ease. Cast in any wind conditions at all ranges. Integrated active load marker clearly identifies precise casting line length. Line works for all skill levels – will load rods easily for beginners and allow more expert casters a great range of fishing styles from a single line.

‘Choosing a line for salmon fishing can be as tricky as choosing a mobile phone tariff. Umpteen lines with different features, each performing differently with different rods and different casting styles – and none are cheap.
So enter the Speyworks 3volution Switch Tip. This multi-tip line attempts to combine the properties of three types of fly-line: short-headed traditional speyline; shooting-head; and skagit. It is the brainchild of well-known speycaster and line innovator Bill Drury.
Bill told us: “The idea came to me a few years ago, but if I’d brought it out then, nobody would have 'got' it.” What Bill means by this is that shooting heads sold with wallets of different density tips have become very popular in the past five years and now short heavy skagit lines used with very heavy tungsten tips also attract a following.
“Think of 3volution as a speycasting line, ” says Bill, “that you can use with heavy tips. It’s versatile. It can be whatever you want it to be.”
So what properties does it have? Its head’s compact length and weight makes it easy to load a rod and cast and it is hence a very good line for beginners. It is supplied with a wallet of different density tips, connected by loops, which means you can fish at different depths very easily. This means that you don’t have to roll up full sinking lines. Its head’s short length and weight also makes it easy to cast heavy and big flies. And the short head is ideal when forming D-loops where there's little space behind you.
For the traditional speycasting experience, just stick with the floating tip.
How does the 3volution achieve all this? It is one line in four sections, plus tips (lengths stated are for the 10/11 rated line to be used with a 15 ft rod). First is the running line (55 ft), next is a short five-inch black band that should be held in the top hand when casting to maintain the optimum loading weight of fly-line outside the rod-tip (although precisely where you hold the line may depend slightly on your rod and casting style).
Next comes the start of the floating head. Unlike a shooting head, which changes abruptly to level running line; the rear part of the 3volution’s head begins with a 10 ft length of level line, which should finish just inside the rod tip, and then there is an unusually long rear taper. It shoots well but will also support the head's heavy and short front taper, and hence the loading point of the line does not have to be quite so precise.
The combined rear and front tapers are 33 ft long, finished with a welded loop. To this loop is attached a choice of four tips: floating, intermediate, slow-sinking and fast-sinking.Each tip is 16 ft long.
To fish the 3volution in classic skagit style, you can attach one of two tungsten tips: T10 and T15. These are 18 ft long. They are sold separately. Two tips of different densities will cost about £30 (available from July).
The belly is coloured “warm grey”, which, Bill says, “won’t spook fish but is visible”. Loops on the end of the front taper and the rear of the tips are helpfully coloured blue to ensure you connect them the right way round. The running line is bright orange so that it is easily visible on the water and has a welded loop at the reel end, so there’s no need for a knot (unless you prefer to tie, say, a slim Albright).
Adding the Skagit element to this multi-tip line can save you money. Bill says, “I’ve seen people buy a skagit line, but then they don’t get on with it and put it back in their fishing bag. That’s expensive. The 3volution allows them to try skagit fishing, but if they don’t like it, they can take off the heavy tips and they still have a good speycasting line.”
We think it’s a good line for a beginner and for experienced rods seeking a flexible line, to fish at different depths or combat strong winds. It is not as elegant and delicate as a traditional one-piece floating spey line.
