The glorious sound of British ska is one that never seems to lose its power & punch, & in 1979 The Beat were at the forefront of a scene that combined politics, social comment & foot-tapping chart hits to create a genuine cultural revolution.
Signed to Jerry Dammers’ legendary 2-Tone label, their 1979 debut single
- a pumped-up cover of Smokey Robinson’s Tears of a Clown
- was a Top 10 smash. & from humble Birmingham beginnings, they quickly became a fixture on TV screens & magazine covers alike… taking their place alongside Madness, The Specials & The Selector in a multi-racial musical explosion that swept across the UK.
With Ranking Roger still at the helm, The Beat is very much a family affair – with Roger’s son Ranking Junior now in the line-up! Join them at ARC for a joyous celebration of classic, floor-shaking, socially-conscious ska.
