Lagavulin has been around since 1816 & located on Lagavulin bay. The distillery is painted white for all to see & perhaps the most beautiful. Lagavulin makes arguably the most intensely flavoured smoky & rich whisky of all. The distillery has a reputation of creating high quality whisky, rather than high quantity & because it is an Islay whisky you can be sure to expect a strong peaty taste. When the Lagavulin 16yo was first created, it was not expected that it would be such as high demand as it was, so much so that for months there was no 16 to be seen because it had all be bought up & demand out numbered supply. Since then they have laid down extra casks to ensure that the public are never deprived again & now it is the biggest seller amongst classic single malts. It is aged in oak casks for 16 years & has had a fair proportion of sherry casks added to it to add an extra fruity-like intensity. The flavour is hard to describe, it has style, tenacity & class, it starts sweet but boasts a subtle dryness with the peat not being simple but multifaceted, it is not too complex but heavy in weight. All in all this is a whisky that should be approached with caution by the beginner but by experienced whisky drinkers, this is known as one of the best there is.
