The Bruichladdich distillery is owned by the 3 Harvey brothers who built the distillery in 1881. The Harvey family has over a century of whisky distilling ownership in their family. The three brothers have a strong belief that the whisky industry has been stifled by industrialisation & self-interest. Companies now days try & do things the quickest way possible but at Bruichladdich they believe that taking time & using authentic equipment is the best way to make their single malts. The single malts are made from Scottish barley & when it comes to maturing the single malts, the boys at Bruichladdich use a variety of different wooded casks. These perform the vital task of allowing the evolution of the spirit by way of subtle & complex interactions between the micro-oxidation of the whiskies flavour compounds. Oak tannins extracted from the wood, the ozone-marine influence of the air absorbed through the wood & the whisky texture. The Bruichladdich DNA Series 3 is another ultra-rare Bruichladdich: MCMLXXXV is edition three in the definitive Bruichladdich DNA series, for the lucky few who get to taste it have the privileged of a glimpse into the heart & soul of this great, elegant spirit. This is a rare limited edition release, master distiller Jim Mc Ewan has married together some of the greatest casks in there warehouse from the mid eighties. The traditional American-oak bourbon casks have been used to infuse the different blends & lend classic creamy vanilla notes. This whisky is a gorgeous copper golden colour & on the nose you get a multiple sensory impression with overtones of sultanas, dates, raisins, sweet barley sugar & a hint of orange zest. After the first impression a second wave of aromas swarm the senses with notes of rich vanilla & nutty nougat, ending the remarkable bouquet with sea breezes & wild flowers reminding you this whisky is matured on Scotland's west coast. On the palate the flavours are deep in the spirit, they spread gently over the taste buds with peat fire warmth & mellow sherry butts entice the flavours of vanilla & dried zesty fruits. The last 2 sherry butts of 1985 were used to create this beautiful Scotch whisky.
