During the 1700's Spain had finally managed to establish a fully functional trade route between Spain & Mexico. High quality Spanish products were in high demand in the colonies so where often shipped to Mexico to sell. One of the more popular products of the time was a sweet Spanish raisin wine. During one of the shippings the crew drank a little bit to much of the wine & where left with almost nothing to sell. To recover the lost money they filled the empty casks with Mexican rum to sell upon thier return to Spain. The rum became so popular it was actually banned from trade & consumption in Spain.
