Of his four symphonies, Franz Schmidt's Symphony No. 1 in E major is something of a throwback, as its form & content appear to be drawn from the symphonies of Schumann & Brahms, & it may seem a bit outmoded for its year of completion, 1901. Yet this fledgling symphony hints at developments to come, particularly in Schmidt's original use of the orchestra (notably in his fresh woodwind combinations), & the surprising lack of Romantic clichés & exaggerated expressions. This cheerful work
