But then, it’s rare to get two teams separated by two divisions competing for a major final, Bradford v Swansea in the 2013 League Cup Final being another anomaly. Villa, languishing in the third tier of English football in 1971, were busily enduring one of their worst ever spells in existence when they fought their way to Wembley – incredibly, they’d lost to Bury in the league just days earlier before making the trip down to the twin towers. Understandably, most people expected a procession for First Division hotshots Tottenham.

Aside from the heroic performance, the 1971 League Cup Final marked a turning point in Villa’s fortunes; just 11 years later, they won the European Cup against Bayern Munich. Something worth celebrating then, preferably whilst wearing an Aston Villa retro 1971 League Cup Final Away shirt. & if anyone asks who wore that top back in the day, just tell them it was some guy who later bought Dennis Bergkamp.
