It's no secret that red roses mean true love. But in floriology
- that's the language of flowers
- there are many meanings that are secret but can now be revealed
- word by word, flower by flower. To discover what violets represent we need to go back to the days of antiquity. In ancient Greek the word for violet was ion
- from which the name Ia was derived. According to mythology a beautiful girl called Ia took the fancy of the sun god Apollo who pursued her with amorous intent. But Ia wasn't interested & asked the goddess Diana to protect her. Which she duly did by turning the girl into a small flower
- one that turned its head away from the sun. Ia was eternally grateful, which is why to this day violets symbolise gratitude. & why they make such a lovely gift when a special 'thank you' is called for. So that the recipient will appreciate not only the violet arrangement, but also the thought behind it, an explanatory card will be included in the box.
