Sean Connery portrays the British thief, who in 1855, was the brains behind the first moving-train robbery. His partners: master safecracker Donald Sutherland & "cat burglar" Wayne Sleep. Lesley- Anne Down plays Connerys mistress (who will arrange his escape after he is caught by the police). The prize: 25, 000 pounds in gold pieces. A thrilling climax has Connery (no stuntman himself) clamouring over the top of a train, speeding smokily under low bridges (shot entirely without back-projection). Cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth (to whom the film in dedicated) gave the film an authentic mid-Victorian look. Written & directed by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park). Based on Michael Crichtons best-selling novel, about a daring gold heist that shocked Victorian society.
