The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art & illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new: using modern printing & collage techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty-first century flare, creating unique & strikingly beautiful prints. For ‘ Kina in Bloom 2014’, Williams has used an antiquated map of China & outlined the country with a thick, pink edging, so that it vaguely resembles an anatomical image of a heart. All around the map, Williams has created a geometric pink border, which she has overlaid with multitudinous flora & fauna in pinks & reds, as well as Victorian-style natural history images: tropical fish, brown bears, regal tigers & exotic butterflies make an appearance, nestled amongst the intricate bouquets. Williams has vividly translated the scientific Victorian arts of cartography & natural history into a bright, beautiful modern-day aesthetic. This print is signed & numbered by the artist.
