Founded as a Roman fort in the year 79AD & known as Deva, Chester is the best preserved walled city in Engl&. Its medieval walls form the most complete circuit around any British town or city. With the largest Roman amphitheatre in the country & a cathedral that is the North West's most popular tourist attraction, Chester has a huge amount to offer. Those in need of retail therapy will get a nice surprise when they discover Chester's Rows. These covered walkways are on the first floor in each of the city's four main streets. Unique not only in the UK, but everywhere in the world, they have allowed double level shopping in the town since at least the 13th Century. The city's racecourse is Britain's oldest sporting venue. The first horse race at the Roodee took place in 1539, replacing the famously bloody Shrove Tuesday football game. Mayor Henry Gee allowed the swap, giving the name the "gee-gees" to horse racing. Today tourists & shoppers alike come to relax & enjoy Chester. Recently voted one of the top five cities in Europe by an American poll, it will be sure to attract many more in the future.
