CREE Q5 LED torch
utilises the popular and
well documented low
profile Cree XP-E
emitter, with a Q5

The incredibly strong
outer casing is
constructed from
Aerospace-grade 6061T
Aluminium, even with a
relatively small 22mm
main shaft still offers a
substantial feel in the
hand. At the tech end of
the torch, the heavy
weight lens protection
bezel measures out at
27mm in diameter. It is
here that the anodised
silver, ‘magnetic
click’ zoom focusing
ring is located. It is
excellently designed and
allows a single hand to
operate therefore a
faster way of zooming
than the ‘push/pull'
style.

The torch measures 12cm
(4.5 inches) in length. A
single AA battery is
simply loaded into the
the shaft, once loaded
the whole lot weighs in
at a lightweight 95g. The
end cap has a thick
rubber O ring creating a
water tight seal (I ran
it under the tap with no
problems at all) and also
comprises a high quality
thick connection spring
giving a very solid
connection.

The simple ON/OFF
rubberised button is
located at the end of the
shaft; this button offers
3 ‘click’modes.
1 click for Full Power
mode
2 clicks for Low Power
mode
3 clicks for Strobe
function

The lens is constructed
from PMMA which is a
clear plastic acrylic
material which is often
used as a replacement for
glass. It is also used in
a lot of high quality
lens based products owed
to it’s very clear and
bright nature - PMMA is
commonly used in places
where shatter-proof glass
or windows are required,
such as the puck barriers
found in ice-hockey rinks
and you have seen what a
clattering they take!
Essentially that makes
this lens very bright and
incredibly hard wearing.

To summarise, this torch
is ideal for 'every day'
use given its size,
water resistance and
durability. At this price
point it’s probably
worth keeping one stashed
in the car glove
compartment or in a Photo
Kit Bag (you never know).
